Hope4 Position Statement on the Prime Minister's Commitment to End Rough Sleeping
Hope4 welcomes the Prime Minister's commitment, made in his first speech in office yesterday (20th July 2026), to end rough sleeping and launch a national drive to tackle one of the most visible and damaging forms of homelessness. The government's recognition that rough sleeping is neither inevitable nor acceptable is an important and encouraging statement of intent.
As a charity working directly with people experiencing homelessness and hardship in Rugby, we see the human impact of homelessness every day. Behind every person sleeping rough is a unique story that may involve trauma, poor mental health, relationship breakdown, financial hardship, addiction, or a lack of suitable housing. For many, rough sleeping is the final stage of a much wider housing crisis rather than the beginning of it.
We are encouraged by the Prime Minister's focus on prevention, partnership working and investment. Experience shows that rough sleeping can be reduced when national government, local authorities, health services, housing providers and voluntary organisations work together with a shared purpose and adequate resources.
Hope4 stands ready to play its part. As a local charity rooted in the Rugby community, we will continue working alongside our partners to support those who are homeless or at risk of homelessness, advocate for effective local solutions, and ensure that the voices of people with lived experience are heard.
The Prime Minister's announcement represents a significant opportunity. We welcome the ambition and look forward to seeing how it is translated into practical action and long-term investment. We believe that, with sustained commitment, collaboration and compassion, meaningful progress can be made towards ending rough sleeping and preventing homelessness before it occurs.
